Ginkgo biloba does not appear to slow the rate of cognitive decline

Snitz, Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh, and colleagues analyzed the results of Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory study to determine if G biloba slowed the rate of cognitive decline in older adults had normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment at the beginning of the study. The GEM study previously found that G biloba is not effective in reducing the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in general. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial including 3069 participants against living in the community, aged 72-96 years who received twice-daily dose of 120 mg extract of G. The study was conducted in six academic medical centers in the United States between 2000 and 2008, with a median follow-up of 6.1 years.
